Current Options and Future Strategies for Epilepsy Treatment
Epilepsy is one of the most common chronic neurological disorders represented by uncontrolable, unpredictable and recurrent seizures. Epilepsy can lead to brain dysfunction as well as cognitive, psychological, and social problems. For the last decades, various treatment options for epilepsy are used in clinical practices. The most well known treatment strategies of epilepsy are; antiepileptic drugs, surgery, vagal nerve stimulation, neuromodulation and ketogenic diet.
Over than 30% of individuals do not respond to common anti-seizure medications and are addressed to as drug-resistant. However, definitions, diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy are still challenging issues for clinicians and researchers. Gene therapies, alternative medicines, new anticonvulsant therapies, deep brain stimulation, responsive neurostimulation, laser interstitial thermal therapy, minimally invasive surgery are some of the new approaches in epilepsy treatment. In tihs lecture, we will discuss the current options and also other future strategies for epilepsy treatment.
